The economic backbone of PNG is the National Road Network (NRN) which carries about 89% of all nationwide passenger and freight traffic. Over the medium term, the Government aims to continue its investments in rehabilitation, maintenance, reconstruction and upgrading programs on the National Road Network, construction of economically vital missing link roads; and design, reconstruction and upgrading of bridges.

The Department of Works and Implementation, National Roads Authority and the Road Traffic Authority are the executing agencies for all road transport sub-sector projects and programs while the Department of Transport as the lead transport sector agency will provide overall policy support and monitoring and evaluation of all projects.
